Ukraine downs 88% of Russia’s Kh-101 cruise missiles despite repeated upgrades

Ukraine’s air defense has shot down about 88% of Kh-101, Kh-55, and Kh-555 cruise missiles launched by Russia against the country since the beginning of 2026. Ukrainian air defense continues to demonstrate high effectiveness despite the Russia’s attempts to improve its strike capabilities.

In particular, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has carried out four significant upgrades of the Kh-101 missile. This is based on detailed analysis of missiles after their use in real combat conditions, conducted by specialists from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.

Experts have identified that the Kh-101 strategic air-launched cruise missile has gone through four stages of modernization:

  • A tandem warhead — Russia “traded” its excessive range (2,500 km) for a second warhead, installed by reducing fuel tank capacity.
  • Cluster munitions with zirconium — the new submunitions contain a zirconium coating that causes sustained burning, meaning the missiles were designed to strike oil depots, fuel bases, and other civilian facilities.
  • An improved combined navigation system — inertial navigation with a laser gyroscope, satellite navigation, and an optical-electronic extreme correlation system.
  • A new electronic countermeasure system SP-504 — the active channel is intended to disrupt radar and surface-to-air missile systems, while the passive channel deploys heat decoys.

During the full-scale invasion, Russia has carried out at least four notable upgrades of the Kh-101 strategic air-launched cruise missile.

The purpose of all these changes is an attempt to compensate for the increasing effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense and to intensify terror against Ukrainian civilians.
