Ukraine, together with Swedish partners, is working to strengthen its aviation and air defense capabilities.

In Stockholm, Ukrainian Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov held a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and a separate discussion with Swedish Minister of Defence Pål Jonson.

During talks with his Swedish counterpart, Mykhailo Fedorov discussed the process of providing Ukraine with Gripen fighter aircraft. Strengthening air defense and aviation capabilities is one of the key priorities for implementing Ukraine’s defense strategy and protecting its airspace.

The sides also discussed expanding cooperation in the defense industry. One of the promising directions is joint work on anti-ballistic solutions and other technologies that could strengthen Ukraine’s and its partners’ defense capabilities.

Ukraine also presented other critical support areas:

  • support for the Czech Initiative for long-range ammunition procurement
  • support for PURL and JUMPSTART programs
  • joint development of “middle strike” capabilities

The parties also discussed cooperation within capability coalitions, including the Electronic Warfare (EW) Coalition. The Ukrainian side proposed ways to further develop Sweden’s defense capabilities within a win-win partnership. Ukraine’s experience and technologies can already strengthen Sweden and other allied countries.

In particular, Ukraine proposed launching the BRAVE SWEDEN project based on the Brave1 defense innovation cluster. This would support joint projects and defense startups, as well as enable exchange of modern warfare experience.

Fedorov also met with representatives of Saab. The main topic was Gripen aircraft. Ukraine considers this platform a potential game changer for strengthening its defense capabilities. Other priority areas of cooperation include radars and satellite communications. Ukraine offered Saab access to battlefield experience, data, and Ukrainian digital solutions, including the DELTA system. The sides also discussed potential joint production.

The minister also met with satellite communications company Ovzon. The parties reviewed its solutions in satellite communications and discussed scaling them for the needs of Ukraine’s armed forces.

Fedorov also met with members of the Swedish Riksdag, led by Speaker Andreas Norlén and Peter Hultqvist, Chair of the Defense Committee.

He presented progress in implementing Ukraine’s defense strategy and achievements across three main domains: air, land, and economy.

Ukraine and Sweden are already cooperating effectively in critical areas such as air defense, radar systems, and electronic warfare. Sweden has also provided specialized equipment for servicing military airfields. Ukraine, in turn, will continue developing joint projects with Sweden within their mutually beneficial cooperation.
