Construction of two major water supply systems is underway in the Odessa region, aimed at providing a stable water supply to more than 68,000 residents across 29 settlements in seven territorial communities.
The projects involve the construction of around 218 km of main water pipelines and almost 385 km of distribution networks within populated areas.
The infrastructure is of strategic importance to local communities. Some settlements currently depend on ageing networks or lack stable centralised access to quality drinking water. The new infrastructure is expected to meet the needs of residents, social institutions, farms and businesses.
“Stable access to drinking water is a basic human need and one of the key conditions for community development. In the Odessa region, we are implementing two large-scale infrastructure projects that will cover 29 settlements and more than 68,000 people. Overall, we need to build more than 600 kilometres of main and distribution networks. Our task is to create a reliable water supply system that will provide communities with water over the long term,” said Mykola Kalashnyk, Ukraine’s Minister for Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport.
Water supply for 11 settlements
The first project is designed to provide water to 11 settlements with a combined population of around 19,800 people.
It includes the construction of 84.06 km of main water pipelines and 180.29 km of distribution networks. The system will have a designed capacity of up to 50,000 cubic metres of water per day.
Work is currently underway simultaneously on two stages of the project. Construction is being carried out at the first-stage pumping station, the main water pipeline, 21 chambers, wells at two pumping stations, a settling channel and a water intake facility.
A temporary production base and access roads are being built at the construction site, while the area is being prepared for further work. Construction of an embankment dam, crushed-stone base and concrete preparation is underway. A guide wall has been installed, and work has begun on secant and bored piles, as well as temporary water pipelines.
Water supply for 18 settlements
The second project is expected to provide a stable water supply to 18 settlements with a combined population of more than 48,600 people.
The project includes the construction of 133.94 km of main water pipelines and 204.4 km of distribution networks. The system will have a designed capacity of 16,580 cubic metres of water per day.
Current work is focused on the construction of a fourth-stage pumping station and a clean-water reservoir. Excavation work is underway, along with the installation of a crushed-stone base and concrete preparation, waterproofing and reinforcement of the foundation slab, and concreting of the tower crane foundation.
The two projects are expected to provide communities across the Odessa region with stable access to quality drinking water and create the necessary infrastructure for residential buildings, schools, medical and other social institutions, farms and businesses.
