Russia is targeting Ukraine’s information and network infrastructure, but the country will not be left without internet access because of its highly decentralised network, Ukrainian presidential adviser on technology and technology expert Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov said.
“Russian forces are attacking our information and network infrastructure. But Ukraine is a country with highly distributed internet connections, so the entire country — regions or cities — will not be left without internet access,” Beskrestnov said.
He added that the attacks could cause local disruptions to internet access. According to him, providers should be able to address such problems quickly.
“The cost of providing internet services may indeed increase to compensate for the cost of repairing damaged infrastructure,” the adviser explained.
Beskrestnov also urged Ukrainians not to succumb to information attacks or panic over reports that internet access could disappear.
“We have already been frightened with claims that there would be no food, then no fuel, and now they are frightening us with the disappearance of the internet,” he said.
