Two people were killed and 36 injured in a large-scale Russian drone attack on Kyiv on September 23, according to the latest figures from the city’s police.
Russian forces launched a large number of drones at the Ukrainian capital, including jet-powered models, with strikes and falling debris reported at several locations across the city.
Police said a petrol station, business centre, office building, private house, shop and vehicles were among the sites damaged. At one location, emergency services recorded a second strike after the initial attack.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier reported 24 people injured before police raised the casualty figure to 36.
“Since this morning, work has been under way to deal with the consequences of the Russian strikes on Kyiv. The Russians launched many drones at the city, a significant number of them jet-powered,” Zelensky said.
He said Russia had continued to target civilian and critical infrastructure, including pharmaceutical facilities, petrol stations, railway infrastructure, communications facilities and shopping centres.
Emergency workers, police and medical teams continued working at the affected sites throughout the day, while investigators documented the damage.
The attack on Kyiv was part of a wider series of Russian strikes. Zelensky said cities and communities in eight Ukrainian regions had been targeted.
The president, who is attending the UN General Assembly in New York, said Ukraine was using meetings with international partners to seek continued support and additional sanctions pressure on Russia.
“During every meeting at the UN General Assembly, we are working to ensure that Ukraine has support,” Zelensky said. “It is important that sanctions send a signal to Russia, and in particular to its oligarchs, that the war must be ended, not simply waited out.”
