Ukraine and Austria are stepping up cooperation on rebuilding Ukraine’s energy sector and strengthening regional energy security, following high-level talks and the signing of a new memorandum.

Denys Shmyhal met with Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger to outline joint priorities and expand collaboration in the energy sector.

Shmyhal highlighted strong potential for both short- and long-term projects, emphasizing that closer cooperation could enhance energy security by diversifying supply routes. He also pointed to opportunities for Austrian investment in Ukraine’s hydropower and wind energy sectors, which would help increase the country’s resilience.

As part of these efforts, the two sides agreed to organize a major conference in Vienna focused on the reconstruction and recovery of Ukraine’s energy system.

A key topic during the meeting was Ukraine’s urgent needs ahead of the next winter season. Shmyhal stressed the importance of emergency repairs and the supply of critical equipment, particularly transformers.

Ukraine also expressed gratitude for Austria’s ongoing support. So far, the country has received more than 159 tons of energy equipment, along with €15.5 million in contributions to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. These resources have been used to procure essential equipment for regions including Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv.

Shmyhal invited Austrian partners to take a more active role in the “Energy Ramstein” coordination format and thanked Vienna for its continued commitment to supporting Ukraine’s energy resilience.
