As a result of humanitarian demining since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 40.7 thousand square kilometers of Ukraine’s territory have already been returned to use.
These figures were announced by representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine during the Ukraine Mine Action Partner Coordination Workshop 2026, which recently took place in Geneva.
In conditions of regular shelling and the risk of re-contamination of areas, Ukraine’s priority remains responsible threat management for the safety of the population. This was emphasized by Colonel Ruslan Berehulia, Head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety, and head of the secretariat of the National Mine Action Authority.
“Today, Ukraine is effectively creating new global standards, because demining here is not just ‘finding mines’ after the war, but a daily adaptation to constantly changing security challenges,” Ruslan Berehulia stressed.
Large-scale work to clear territories is part of the implementation of the President of Ukraine’s strategy to create a safe environment for citizens and restore the economic potential of de-occupied regions.
It is also noted that in March 2026 alone, units of the Ministry of Defense cleared 876 hectares of liberated territory from Russian forces, and since the beginning of the year — 2,831 hectares.
