On Sunday, April 26, on the anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, Ukraine will hold an International Donor Conference aimed at replenishing the International Coernobyl Cooperation Account.

This was announced by Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Yevhen Perebyinis during a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Social Policy and Veterans’ Rights.

“We, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are ensuring international coordination for the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster. A key element of this work will be the International Donor Conference, which will take place on April 26. The main focus of our work with donors is the replenishment of the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account, which is administered by the EBRD,” he said.

Perebyinis clarified that the conference is currently confirmed to include the participation of the Director General of the IAEA, the Vice President of the EIB, the President of the EBRD, and representatives from more than 25 countries and organizations.

The diplomat added that preliminary estimates put the needs for restoring the confinement structure at over €500 million, which requires urgent mobilization of international support, and Ukraine has received positive signals regarding future contributions from partners.

The Foreign Ministry also plans to organize a visit of ambassadors to Chornobyl in the near future, a press tour for foreign journalists next week, and to facilitate an international exhibition titled “Chornobyl. 40 Years Later” on April 24.
