The Security Service of Ukraine demonstrated a new generation of uncrewed surface platforms called Sea Baby. They have been fitted with strengthened engines, extended range, and new armament. The SSU noted that the new Sea Baby variants were developed using funds raised by Ukrainians on the UNITED24 fundraising platform. On February 22, 2024 UNITED24 and monobank launched a campaign to raise money for 35 Sea Baby maritime drones for the SSU — the fundraiser closed in 36 hours.

The upgraded drones can cover distances of more than 1,500 km, carry up to 2,000 kg of payload, and feature reinforced engines and a modern navigation system, the SSU says. Previous models were able to carry 850 kg of explosives, reach speeds of 90 km/h and travel 1,000 km.

The SSU development team demonstrated two drones with different weapons. The first is equipped with a gyro‑stabilized machine‑gun mount that has an automatic target‑acquisition and recognition system. The second carries heavy armament: a 10‑round Grad multiple‑rocket launcher. Their development was reported last year.

“Our Sea Baby is not just a drone but a multifunctional platform that is constantly being improved. Today we can confirm they are equipped with a rocket salvo system, and this technological solution is already showing powerful results. So the enemy should expect new surprises. We are working, as always, effectively,” the SSU said.

One such surprise was the SSU operation on the night of December 5–6, 2024, in the Kerch Bay. When Russian occupiers tried to intercept a Sea Baby, the Ukrainian drones suddenly returned fire.

“The Security Service continually develops other samples of cutting‑edge weaponry and is already successfully using them in the Black Sea. However, detailed information about these systems is not being disclosed at this time,” the developers added.
