Ukraine’s counterintelligence service, the Security Service of Ukraine, has detained a Russian agent “in the act” who had been adjusting one of the largest Russian air attacks on Kyiv on the night of May 24 this year.

The suspect was detained the day after the deadly strike on the capital, while conducting reconnaissance near a Ministry of Defense facility and assessing the aftermath of enemy “arrivals” (strikes).

The collected data was intended to be transmitted in real time to his handler in Russia to prepare new attacks and adjust follow-up strikes on the city.

According to the investigation, the task was carried out by an 18-year-old Kyiv resident who came to the attention of Russian intelligence services while searching for “easy money” in Telegram channels.

After recruitment, the agent traveled to the outskirts of the capital, where he marked transport corridors used to move Ukrainian Armed Forces military equipment on Google Maps.

This was a test assignment, after which he was instructed to document the aftermath of a combined attack on Kyiv and report back to Russian forces.

SSU officers documented how the agent arrived at a Ministry of Defense facility to assess its external condition after the overnight strike.

At the scene, investigators seized a smartphone containing prepared intelligence reports with detailed descriptions of the consequences of the attack.

The suspect has been placed in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
