Residents of Tulcea County in northern Romania received a RO-ALERT air raid warning early on Friday, May 1, amid a Russian drone attack targeting Ukraine’s Odessa region near the Romanian border.
According to Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, the alert was issued after the detection of a group of nine drones moving toward Ukrainian airspace in the vicinity of the Danube River.
“Following the detection of a group of 9 drones heading towards the Ukrainian airspace, the National Military Command Center (core) notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations regarding the establishment of alert measures for the population in the North of Tulcea County, and a RO-Alert message was sent at 03:36,” the ministry said.
Authorities stressed that no drones or radar contacts were detected entering Romanian airspace.
Surveillance systems did not register any violations of Romania’s national airspace, the ministry added.
Explosions were reported on the Ukrainian side of the Danube River, in the port cities of Izmail and Kiliia.
The air alert in Tulcea County was lifted at 04:03, according to the statement.
