A spill of sunflower oil has been recorded in the waters of the port of Chornomorsk in Odessa region following a Russian attack on April 26, 2026. The incident occurred after infrastructure at the Chornomorsk Commercial Sea Port was damaged, according to Ukraine’s State Environmental Inspectorate for the South-Western District.

Officials said that during the strike a storage tank containing around 6,000 tonnes of sunflower oil was destroyed in a fire.

Emergency services of the Chornomorsk branch of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority quickly moved to contain the consequences. Containment barriers were installed, and the stormwater drainage system was blocked to prevent further spread of the oil into the marine environment.

State environmental inspectors who examined the site confirmed that no soil contamination was detected due to the concrete surface of the area. However, leakage into the port’s water area was recorded.

“A slick of oil has formed on the water surface with an approximate size of 400 by 200 meters. Booms have been deployed to contain it,” the State Environmental Inspectorate for the South-Western District said.

Specialists are continuing to assess the scale of environmental damage and monitor conditions in the port area.
