The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that the Russian attack on the Novodnistrovsk Hydroelectric Power Plant in Ukraine has created an environmental threat to the Dniester River and may affect the country’s water supply.
This was reported in a post by the Moldovan president on the platform X (Twitter).
According to the head of state, the consequences of the strike on the Novodnistrovsk Hydroelectric Power Plant in Chernivtsi region, which occurred on March 7, have already resulted in an oil spill in the river.
“Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s Novodnistrovsk hydropower plant has spilled oil into the Nistru River, threatening Moldova’s water supply. We declared environmental alert and are acting to protect our people,” the politician wrote.
The President of Moldova stressed that responsibility for what happened lies with Russia.
“Russia bears full responsibility,” Sandu emphasized.
After the Russian strike on the Dniester hydroelectric power plant, specialists detected traces of technical oils in the water.
According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, the pollution may be linked to a leak of missile fuel.
Flows of contaminated water have spread downstream along the Dniester. In particular, traces of pollution have been recorded near the Moldovan village of Naslavcea.
Amid the environmental risks, the Moldovan government has already requested support from the European Union, as reported by the country’s prime minister, Alexandru Munteanu.
In addition, Ukraine and Moldova have agreed to jointly appeal to international organizations to condemn Russia’s actions, which led to damage to hydropower infrastructure and pollution of the Dniester River.
