The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has advised Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini to call for a peace agreement to be signed not by President Volodymyr Zelensky, but by Vladimir Putin.
This was stated by Ukraine’s MFA spokesperson, Heorhii Tykhyi, on X (formerly Twitter).
“Between 3,000 and 5,000 Ukrainians took part in the Battle of Monte Cassino, one of the hardest battles of World War II. They did not have a choice ‘between defeat and destruction,’ even when victory seemed far away. They fought shoulder to shoulder with other allies because it was about the freedom of Italy and all of Europe,” the diplomat reminded.
He emphasized that, however difficult Ukraine’s struggle is today, it is just as principled as it was 80 years ago.
Tykhyi also noted that Ukraine will always be grateful for Italy’s support and for all Italians who, “unlike Matteo Salvini,” understand that the fate of peace in Europe is being decided on the battlefield in Ukraine.
“And to the Deputy Prime Minister, if he is concerned about a peace agreement, we advise him to turn not to the President of Ukraine—a country defending itself against aggression—but to Putin, who started this war,” the MFA spokesperson said.
Salvini had accused Zelensky of being ungrateful to Europe and called for a peace agreement to be signed as soon as possible.
