President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Ukrainian diplomats to intensify engagement with China, arguing that stronger dialogue is essential to prevent Beijing from moving into full alignment with Russia.
"We need to seek dialogue with China if we do not want China to fully support the Russians. If it sees its future only with Russia and no other countries, we have to work on changing that," Zelensky said during a meeting with Ukrainian ambassadors in Kyiv on Monday.
The president noted that Ukraine has already made progress in strengthening relations with several countries, including the Philippines, but stressed that diplomatic efforts must continue.
"We need to rebuild and further develop all of these relationships," he said.
Zelensky also instructed diplomats to pay particular attention to Syria, saying the country is undergoing a period of transformation following the change of government. He noted that Ukraine was among the first countries to support Syria's new authorities and said cooperation with Damascus should be expanded.
In addition, the president emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukraine's presence across Latin America. He also said he expects the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Office of the President, to present a new strategy for Ukraine's relations with African countries.
