Kyiv and Odessa regions targeted in massive Russian missile and drone attack

Overnight on August 22, starting at 18:00 on August 21, Russia attacked Ukraine with Iskander-M and S-400 missiles flying on ballistic trajectories, as well as three Kh-31P/Kh-59 air-launched missiles fired from Russia’s Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod regions and from airspace over the Black Sea.

The attack also involved Banderol loitering munitions and 217 Shahed-type strike UAVs, more than 50 of them jet-powered, as well as Gerbera drones and Parodiya decoy drones. They were launched from Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, as well as from temporarily occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in temporarily occupied Crimea.

The main targets of the attack were Kyiv and Odessa regions.

Ukraine’s aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups of the Defence Forces, were involved in repelling the attack.

According to preliminary data as of 09:00, Ukrainian air defences shot down or suppressed three Kh-31P/Kh-59 air-launched missiles, six Banderol loitering munitions, and 182 Russian UAVs, including Shahed, Gerbera and other types, across the north, south, east and centre of the country.

Russian aerial weapons were recorded hitting 41 locations, while debris from intercepted targets fell at 12 locations.
