Ivan Kyrychevskyi: Russia's arsenal of medium-range ballistic missiles Oreshnik is beginning to look significant

One of the most comprehensive sources on nuclear weapons worldwide is considered to be the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and they have just released a new review on the topic of Russia’s nuclear arsenal.

What is definitely worth highlighting here:

The authors of the review estimate that Russia currently has only 45 Tu-95MS strategic bombers.

Based on this, one can conclude that following last year’s Spiderweb operation and a combination of other factors, Russia has effectively “lost” about a quarter of its fleet, or up to 15 Tu-95MS aircraft.

At the same time, the arsenal of medium-range ballistic missiles Oreshnik is beginning to look significant, at least in psychological terms.

The authors of the review believe that the stock of such MRBMs amounts to 12 units.

This does not strongly conflict with assessments from the Main Directorate of Intelligence, published in the media in early May 2026, according to which Russia had up to 10 Oreshnik missiles at that time.

In addition, Russia also has at least 16 launchers for 9M729 Iskander-K cruise missiles, about which the key point is that their range is sufficient to cover the entire territory of Ukraine.
