Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that the government is banning imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.
In a post on X, Magyar also said that the government was withdrawing Hungary’s intention to leave the International Criminal Court.
According to Hungary Today, a debate broke out within the Hungarian government on Thursday over the legal basis for restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural imports.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Economy Szabolcs Bona said in a social media post that the previous government had left behind legal uncertainty. He explained that earlier import restrictions were tied to special provisions introduced under the national state of emergency, and once those measures expired, the restrictions were not automatically incorporated into law.
Bona said his ministry would prepare new legislation to restore legal certainty regarding the protection of the Hungarian market and domestic producers. The measures are expected to cover meat products (beef, pork, lamb, goat meat, and poultry), frozen vegetables, and grain products.
