Slovakia will work alongside Ukraine and other partners for peace and is ready to define its position on security guarantees for Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said following a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Uzhhorod.
Key topics of discussion included bilateral relations, efforts toward peace, security guarantees, Europe’s energy independence, and joint energy projects. The leaders also agreed to hold an intergovernmental commission meeting in October.
“Prime Minister Fico is not visiting Uzhhorod for the first time, but this was our first meeting here. It is important to maintain a pragmatic approach, as we did today, and to continue discussions at the ministerial and institutional levels, not just between leaders,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president briefed Fico on his recent conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump and ongoing efforts with coalition partners to advance peace and security guarantees. Fico shared updates on his contacts in China.
“We count on support for our peace initiatives, and Robert assured that Slovakia will work with us and other partners toward peace,” Zelensky added.
The leaders also addressed security guarantees for Ukraine. Slovakia is ready to define its position and is open to dialogue.
“Slovakia, as a small country, cannot play the leading role, but we support all initiatives that can lead to peace,” Fico said.
Cooperation within a shelter coalition was discussed, focusing on schools and kindergartens, with ministers tasked to ensure tangible results.
Energy independence in Europe and Ukraine–Slovakia cooperation were also highlighted, including electricity imports for Ukraine and the transit of Ukrainian energy resources through Slovakia to third countries. Fico noted the significant potential of this collaboration. Zelensky emphasized that Europe must respond to the importance of energy independence, stating that Russian oil and gas have no future.
The future of Ukraine’s EU membership was also discussed, with Zelensky thanking Slovakia for supporting Ukraine’s European path. Both leaders agreed that Ukraine and Moldova should continue moving together toward EU membership.
Prime Minister Fico expressed gratitude for Ukraine’s protection of the Slovak community and its rights.
The leaders concluded by agreeing to further develop cooperation in the economy, energy, and infrastructure, and to maintain ongoing contact.
