As of May 11, 2025, Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities contained over 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas, according to ExPro Daily Gas. This is the lowest level recorded on this date in at least the past 11 years.
The total volume stored stands at nearly 6.02 bcm, which is 31.7% (or 2.79 bcm) less than a year ago. The storage facilities are currently 19.4% full. Of this, 1.28 bcm are active reserves available for user withdrawal.
Despite a recent drop in daily injection volumes (26 million cubic meters on May 11), the pace of injections in May has exceeded last year’s. Since the beginning of the month, over 350 million cubic meters have been injected—up 33% compared to the same period in 2024. In total, 610 million cubic meters have been added since the start of the injection season on April 17.
With stable imports of around 14 million cubic meters per day, reserves could reach 6.6 bcm by the end of May. Ukraine is also gradually restoring domestic production, which was hit hard by Russian missile strikes in February and March.
To reach the November 2024 storage level of 12.92 bcm, Ukraine will need to inject about 6.3 bcm between June and October. Part of that will come from domestic production, but 3–3.5 bcm will need to be imported.
- During the winter, Russia destroyed nearly half of Ukraine’s gas production. To ensure heating supply for the population, the government is securing over €400 million to import gas.
- In early March, Naftogaz arranged the delivery of 100 million cubic meters of LNG from a shipment that arrived at the Klaipėda terminal in Lithuania. After being transported via the GIPL pipeline connecting Lithuania and Poland, the gas was delivered through Polish territory to the Drozdovychi interconnector on the Ukrainian border, where Naftogaz received it.
- The second shipment of American LNG, contracted on March 18, was delivered to the Świnoujście terminal in Poland and transported to the Polish-Ukrainian border after regasification. Naftogaz plans to use this gas to build a strategic fuel reserve for the upcoming heating season. On April 24, Naftogaz signed a third contract with Poland’s Orlen for additional American gas deliveries.
