Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova are moving toward a more practical format of economic cooperation, focusing on areas of key regional importance — food security, trade, logistics, and water resource management.

Against the backdrop of war and global instability, both countries are demonstrating readiness to act jointly, quickly, and with a focus on concrete results.

During a meeting between representatives of Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to Ukraine, Victor Chirilă, the sides discussed key areas of bilateral cooperation — primarily in the agricultural sector and water resource management.

“Ukraine is interested in further deepening cooperation with the Republic of Moldova both in agricultural development and food security, as well as in water resource management. An important direction is the coordination of actions regarding the sustainable use of the Dniester River basin, the preservation of water resources, and the implementation of joint practical solutions that meet the interests of both countries,” said Iryna Ovcharenko, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

Moldova confirmed its readiness to continue importing Ukrainian agricultural products and announced a series of working meetings to address practical issues. The Ukrainian side, in turn, emphasized the importance of further simplifying trade procedures, strengthening laboratory control, and expanding cooperation in the agricultural sector.

As part of the dialogue, the sides already reached an understanding regarding poultry meat exports and agreed to focus jointly on strengthening logistical resilience amid wartime challenges.

A separate part of the negotiations concerned water resource management. The parties stressed the importance of coordination within agreements on the Dniester basin, particularly regarding sustainable water use, harmonization of management plans, and reducing pollution risks.

Special attention was given to the work of the Dniester Commission, which ensures rapid response to emergencies, including sudden pollution incidents.

They also discussed the impact of Russian aggression on water resources and the need to strengthen water quality monitoring, including regular laboratory testing.

Among the prospective directions are joint infrastructure projects to improve regional water security. In particular, this includes the construction of a pumping station to supply Lake Cahul with water from the Danube. The parties agree that such initiatives require joint funding.

Following the meeting, Ukraine and Moldova agreed to continue coordination in water resource management and to develop joint environmental projects.
