Romania has decided to strip the Russian Federation of its consulate general on the Black Sea coast in the city of Constanța, fully shutting down the diplomatic mission. Romanian President Nicușor Dan officially announced the signing of the corresponding decree. Alongside the closure of the diplomatic institution, the head of state also decided to expel the head of the mission, declaring the Russian consul persona non grata.
These radical and tough measures by official Bucharest on the Black Sea coast came as an immediate direct response to another act of aggression by the Kremlin recorded in the border region, as reported by Romania Journal.
The immediate reason for the closure of the consulate general and the expulsion of the diplomat was a nighttime incident involving a violation of Romanian airspace and the crash of a Russian strike drone into a residential district of the Romanian city of Galați.
As a result of the direct impact of the enemy drone on a ten-story apartment building, a powerful explosion occurred and a major fire broke out. Two civilians sustained injuries of varying severity and were promptly hospitalized at the county emergency hospital, while emergency services evacuated more than 200 people from the danger zone.
President Nicușor Dan placed full responsibility for the attack and its consequences directly on the leadership of the Russian Federation.
The head of state emphasized that Romania would under no circumstances allow its national security and sovereignty to be disregarded because of the Kremlin’s aggressive military actions.
Romanian authorities officially classify the crash of the combat drone into a residential building as one of the most serious and dangerous security challenges faced by the country since the beginning of the full-scale international conflict.
