In the spring of 2025, Ukraine launched the “Drone Line” initiative, established by the President of Ukraine. Its goal is to systematically strengthen the use of unmanned systems in the Defense Forces, scaling the most effective combat practices and creating a sustainable technological advantage on the front line.

The “Drone Line” is not a separate unit or a one-time equipment project. It is about building a unified system for deploying drones along the entire line of combat engagement.

Since its launch, the project has become one of the largest foreign mechanisms for direct financing of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex in the UAV sector.

The total funding package amounts to $880 million, with support from the Netherlands. This funding covers large-scale procurement of FPV drones, ISR systems, and drone bombers.

Currently, more than 1,000 crews operate within the “Drone Line.” Units from the project destroy nearly one in four Russian servicemen on the front, and in January–February, one in three. Just over the winter, the unmanned systems forces, including the “Drone Line” units, incapacitated about 30,000 enemy personnel.

The “Drone Line,” initiated by the President, is aimed at scaling the most effective Ukrainian military UAV units. The project is designed to create a zone where the enemy cannot move without losses, allowing military UAV units to detect and destroy targets before they approach Ukrainian positions.

The development and scaling of the project are key conditions for halting Russia on the ground, in line with Ukraine’s war plan announced by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

The “Drone Line” demonstrates Ukraine’s shift from fragmented drone use to a systematic approach, where drones become a full-fledged element of defensive tactics. The initiative combines combat experience, technology, and international support, creating a modern warfare model in which technological advantage directly impacts the battlefield and helps save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.
