Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov will head the jury for the documentary award “Golden Eye” at the Cannes Film Festival, the award’s website reported.

The “Golden Eye” award has been presented since 2015 for the best documentary film among works selected from various programs of the Cannes Film Festival, including the main competition, “Un Certain Regard,” and parallel sections.
The jury will announce the winner on May 22 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

Mstyslav Chernov is a Ukrainian filmmaker, war correspondent, and writer. He has established himself as one of the leading figures in field journalism, covering some of the most significant conflicts of recent years: the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, the war in Donbas, the MH17 plane crash, the Syrian civil war, the battle of Mosul in Iraq, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
His work on the siege of Mariupol brought him international recognition, including the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The footage shot in Mariupol served as the basis for the documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary at the 2024 Oscars ceremony, as well as a BAFTA award.
Mstyslav Chernov is the president of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) and has been a member of PEN Ukraine since 2022. His work addresses conflicts, social issues, and environmental crises in all their forms: film, photography, writing, and virtual reality.
Chernov has been injured several times while reporting from war zones. His latest film, “At 2,000 Meters to Andriivka,” released in September 2025, vividly and immersively portrays Ukrainian soldiers on the front line and the realities of modern warfare.
