The global logistics market has seen a significant development as Mediterranean Shipping Company (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the world’s largest container shipping line, has acquired a 51% stake in the container terminal TIS in Ukraine’s Odessa region, according to market sources.
Industry insiders say the deal has already been finalized, marking the first known case of a major global container shipping operator directly entering the capital of a Ukrainian container terminal.
While the exact value of the transaction has not been disclosed, logistics experts describe it as one of the most significant deals in Ukraine’s transport sector over the past decade.
The terminal involved in the deal, TIS, is one of Ukraine’s largest port operators by cargo volume. Founded in 1994, the company manages six specialized maritime terminals in the Port of Pivdennyi near Odessa, along with railway infrastructure and a tug fleet.
The entry of MSC into TIS is seen as a major milestone for Ukraine’s port sector, potentially signaling deeper integration into global shipping networks even amid wartime conditions.
MSC is a Swiss-based family-owned company founded in 1970. It operates a fleet of over a thousand vessels and handles container traffic across hundreds of ports worldwide. Beyond shipping, the company is also active in port infrastructure, inland logistics, rail, and air transport investments.
Speaking to Latifundist media, president of the Association of International Freight Forwarders of Ukraine Viktor Berestenko said MSC’s entry could bring higher standards and stronger competition.
“This is a positive trend and a signal for the Ukrainian market. The arrival of international companies means international standards, customer focus, management systems and quality,” he said.
Analysts note that the deal could strengthen Ukraine’s position in global shipping routes, particularly through the Black Sea, if stable logistics conditions are maintained.
