A UN Development Programme (UNDP) office has opened in Mykolaiv to support communities in the region.

This was reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration on Facebook.

“UNDP in Ukraine has officially opened a new office in Mykolaiv, expanding its presence in the region and strengthening its capacity to support communities in Mykolaiv region on their path to reconstruction, return, resilience building, and implementation of long-term reforms necessary for sustainable development and Ukraine’s European integration,” the statement said.

The opening of the office was made possible within the framework of a three-year Strategic Partnership for Mykolaiv, signed between the Danish Government, UNDP, the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, and the City Council. The partnership provides funding of over $36 million and focuses on restoring critical infrastructure, revitalizing the local economy, strengthening institutions, and increasing community resilience. Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, emphasized that the UNDP office in Mykolaiv is an important step in strengthening cooperation and ensuring more effective implementation of joint initiatives.

“It was important to open the office directly in Mykolaiv to work more efficiently. I am glad this has been realized, as it will greatly improve communication and allow us to work even more effectively. Economic development and recovery are extremely important for our region today, so we rely on our partners’ support not only in humanitarian and social areas but also in information management,” Kim said.

UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, Auke Lootsma, stressed that recovery is about empowering communities and creating the foundation for long-term development.

“This new office and our staff, most of whom are residents of Mykolaiv, will allow us to work even more closely with local partners to provide comprehensive support packages through a regional recovery approach. Together with Denmark and other development partners, we aim to help Mykolaiv region rebuild stronger, more resilient, and fully aligned with Ukraine’s path toward European integration,” Lootsma said.

Jakob Hansen, head of the Danish Embassy office in Mykolaiv, emphasized that UNDP will be one of the region’s key partners for the coming years.

“We are very pleased that the UNDP team will now be working directly in Mykolaiv. This will significantly enhance the effectiveness of our cooperation. Mykolaiv is a city where decisions are often made quickly and on an operational basis, so the physical presence of partners here is very important,” Hansen said.
