Russia does not show a serious intent to end the war, so it is necessary to set specific deadlines for decisions and consistently apply sanctions to make the Kremlin understand that there is no alternative to peace.

This was stated by Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Minister of Foreign Trade, Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Xavier Bettel, at a joint press conference with his counterparts from Ukraine, Belgium, and the Netherlands in Odessa.

The Luxembourg Foreign Minister noted that when he sees Russia’s demands for ending the war, he has serious doubts that the Kremlin genuinely wants peace.

“I do not see a serious intent from Russia to end the war. What must we do? We must set specific deadlines for decisions, and if they are not met, act consistently and apply sanctions together with the Americans and other countries. We have to make Russia understand that there is no alternative to peace. As long as they think that by demonstrating ‘goodwill’ they can gain two or three weeks, the war will not end,” Bettel said.

He added that while discussions continue over when and where peace talks should take place, people are dying every day.

“Therefore, the question is not ‘when’ or ‘where’ — this needs to be done now,” emphasized the Luxembourg Foreign Minister.
