Adapting Ukraine’s agricultural sector to European Union standards will require considerable time, said Oleh Khomenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club association, during a roundtable involving Ukrainian and Polish agricultural associations.
He noted that the war has demonstrated the importance of food security for Europe, and that cooperation between Ukraine and Poland could strengthen the resilience of the agricultural sector.
“Ukraine’s agricultural sector is already preparing to operate under European Union rules — companies are testing and implementing technologies that meet European standards. However, for the agricultural sector this is not a matter of a single season, because adapting technological processes, finding alternatives, and testing new solutions require at least three to four years. That is why a transition period is critically important,” Khomenko emphasized.
Participants in the roundtable also discussed the adaptation of Ukraine’s agricultural sector to EU standards and the need to move from competition toward partnership-based cooperation.
It was noted that Ukrainian companies have already begun restructuring production processes, but the transformation will take time, particularly in adapting technological regulations and the plant protection products market.
Special attention during the meeting was devoted to opportunities for cooperation in the bioeconomy sector, including the development of biomethane, bioethanol, biomaterials, plastic substitutes, and deep agricultural processing.
