Deploying THAAD-type missile defense systems in Ukraine, which are currently used by Middle Eastern countries, could neutralize the threat of Russian aerial bombs, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a briefing with journalists.
According to the President, the issue of supplying these systems has been discussed with the U.S. side.
“Ukraine already has experience working with Middle Eastern and Gulf countries in consultations and expertise. At the same time, we want to rely on the missile defense systems that these countries have but which we do not. Specifically, I mean THAAD and other systems. Such systems are not even in Europe. It is very important that they are in Ukraine. Then, for example, the threat of Russian aerial bombs simply would not exist in Ukraine. At least within 200 kilometers, we would completely eliminate this threat. Russian planes simply would not approach — and that’s it,” he said.
Zelensky noted that the Ukrainian side would like to receive an answer on this issue as well. Kyiv will propose its own vision regarding this matter.
“Then the U.S. side will analyze everything. Maybe they will reduce something, maybe not — and they will respond to us. We agreed to do this in the near future,” he added.
