Ukraine will be able to quickly establish production of anti-personnel mines after withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention.
This was stated by MP Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the parliamentary committee on national security, defense, and intelligence, during a briefing.
“I believe Ukraine will be able to rapidly launch mine production to deter the enemy from attempting offensives,” he said.
According to the MP, this will not require changes to national legislation:
“The termination and denunciation of the Ottawa Convention will be sufficient for Ukrainian manufacturers, both state-owned and private, to produce these types of weapons. As of today, preparations for such production are already actively underway. I believe we will very quickly be able to establish production and deploy these means of deterring enemy infantry,” Venislavskyi emphasized.
At the same time, he explained that after denouncing the Convention, Ukraine will be able to procure or purchase such types of mines from countries that have either not signed or have also withdrawn from the Convention.
“Exiting the Convention is also a very important step in terms of strengthening our defense capabilities,” he added.
