The Hungarian Parliament voted on Tuesday to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, which investigates war crimes and genocide.
This was announced by the country’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on the social media platform X.
“The Hungarian Parliament has just voted to withdraw from the ICC. With this decision, we are rejecting participation in a politicized institution that has lost its impartiality and credibility,” wrote Hungary’s top diplomat.
The head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, Gergely Gulyás, had announced in early April that the country would begin the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court.
The statement came on the same day that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Budapest, despite an international arrest warrant issued against him.
In November last year, the Hungarian government invited Netanyahu after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant accusing him of crimes against humanity for Israel’s operations in the Gaza Strip.
