The Polish government is investing over €57.7 million in the development of road and rail infrastructure along the Poland-Ukraine border, the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy of Poland reports.

Of this amount, €52.5 million will be allocated to road and rail investments under the Interreg NEXT Poland-Ukraine 2021–2027 programme, while €5.1 million will support small economic projects.

According to the ministry, these investments will improve road safety, reduce travel time for residents, and make freight transport faster and safer. They will also have a positive impact on the circular economy, supporting initiatives for material reuse and environmentally friendly practices.

On October 8, the Monitoring Committee of the Interreg NEXT Poland-Ukraine 2021–2027 programme approved co-financing for six new projects. Four of them are road projects, with the Polish government allocating €41.85 million. These include the modernization of regional roads near Augustów, Tomaszów Lubelski, Sokołów Podlaski, and Krościenko near the Ukrainian border.

Another project, worth €10.72 million, involves repairing railway tracks on line 101 and at the Werchrata station on the Polish side of the border. The Ukrainian side will modernize the Lviv railway station.

The Regional Development Agency in the Ternopil region will implement projects from the new Small Projects Fund, financing circular economy initiatives in Ukraine worth €20,000–90,000.

Additionally, €9.7 million will be invested in road upgrades near Augustów and Kovel on the Ukrainian side of the border, while €7.4 million will go to improving transport connections in Tomaszów Lubelski and Klevan for faster and safer movement of goods and passengers.

In the Mazowieckie Voivodeship and Ternopil region, €8.1 million will fund the construction of a new road section in Sokołów Podlaski and the reconstruction of a bridge in Terebovlia.

Another €16.5 million will be allocated to reconstruct roads leading to the border crossing point “Krościenko–Smilnytsia” and in Bolekhiv (Ivano-Frankivsk region), Nahirne (Lviv region), and Zhornava (Zakarpattia).

On the railway, line 101 and Werchrata station in Poland will be renovated, while Lviv station will be modernized to improve passenger capacity, comfort, and infrastructure adaptation for growing cross-border transport needs. Total investment: €10.72 million.

The Monitoring Committee also approved funding for projects from reserve lists using savings from current projects. Discussions have begun regarding the next financial perspective for 2028–2034 and the continuation of Poland-Ukraine cross-border cooperation using its proven formula.
