Japan is providing an additional USD 3.8 million to support UNESCO’s activities in Ukraine in the areas of cultural heritage, education, and access to information.
The signing ceremony for the relevant agreement took place at the UNESCO Office in Ukraine on Tuesday, February 10, with the participation of representatives of government institutions, international organizations, and the diplomatic corps, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“This new contribution from Japan comes at a critical moment for Ukraine, as institutions, professionals, and communities need support to continue responding to the devastating impact of the war. Thanks to this partnership, UNESCO can continue supporting teachers, journalists, cultural professionals, communities, and public institutions in protecting education, safeguarding cultural heritage, and ensuring access to reliable information,” said Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, Head of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine.

As noted during the ceremony, the additional funding will allow UNESCO to continue and expand its support for Ukraine across three priority areas: culture, education, and communication and information.
Jessica Jevons, a representative of UNESCO’s Bureau of Strategic Planning, said that following the signing of the agreement, Japan’s total support for Ukraine through this mechanism since 2022 has reached approximately USD 28 million. UNESCO also emphasized that Japan is the organization’s largest donor for programs in Ukraine.
