Bulgarian parliament blocks attempt to scrap security deal with Ukraine

On July 1, Bulgaria’s parliament rejected a draft law proposed by the pro-Russian party “Vazrazhdane” that aimed to obligate the government to cancel a 10-year security cooperation agreement with Ukraine.

According to the Bulgarian News Agency, only 10 MPs voted in favor of the bill, 160 voted against it, and 14 abstained.

Before the vote, Silvia Hristova, a member of the ruling party “Progressive Bulgaria,” stated in the parliamentary chamber that her party would not support the bill, citing a Constitutional Court decision which emphasized that parliament should not interfere with the government’s powers.

Georgi Georgiev from “Vazrazhdane” argued that this position contradicts the election promises of current Prime Minister Rumen Radev, who had previously said he would cancel the agreement if he came to power.

The pro-Russian party also maintained that such important issues should be decided by the country’s parliament rather than a caretaker government.
