The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is purchasing 8,000 Octopus interceptors to strengthen air defense and increase the number of enemy aerial targets destroyed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Octopus is an interceptor designed to counter Shahed-type strike drones with automatic target guidance, developed within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The system has already proven its effectiveness in combat conditions.
Twenty-nine Ukrainian companies that received the relevant licenses have joined production, along with the government of the United Kingdom. Four manufacturers have already signed state contracts for supply.
This approach allows for rapid scaling of the technology and ensures that the Defense Forces are provided with the necessary equipment.
The article also notes that scaling became possible thanks to a government decision that enabled the transfer of military technologies to Ukrainian manufacturers. Previously, such a mechanism did not exist.
The state has systematically opened access to military developments for scaling within the Ukrainian defense-industrial complex, while preserving intellectual property rights.
The Octopus interceptor demonstrates stable effectiveness in various operational conditions:
- destroys targets both day and night
- operates under electronic warfare (EW) conditions
- is effective at low altitudes
According to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov, the Ministry is ensuring a full scaling cycle — from technology transfer to procurement and delivery to the armed forces. This allows for rapid production growth and meeting frontline needs. It also contributes to the development of Ukraine’s defense industry and serves as an example of effective public-private partnership, where battlefield technologies are quickly scaled into serial production.
“Following the President’s directive, we are scaling effective air defense solutions to achieve the goals of 100% detection and at least 95% neutralization of enemy aerial targets,” the minister concluded.
