Russian forces in southern Ukraine have altered their assault tactics, increasingly relying on motorcycles, ATVs, and buggies to traverse exposed areas quickly and reach forward positions, according to Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces.
Speaking on Ukrainian television, Voloshyn said the change reflects both seasonal and terrain factors.
“There is no snow anymore, and the greenery has not yet fully emerged, so the battlefield palette looks different. Reconnaissance drones now have longer visibility, prompting the enemy to move more covertly while advancing,” he explained.
The spokesperson noted that Russian forces must now cover greater distances while minimizing exposure, leading to the renewed use of light motorized vehicles.
“We have observed motorcycles, ATVs, buggies, and other light vehicles being deployed in some directions to cross kill zones as quickly as possible and reach their forward positions,” Voloshyn said.
Ukrainian forces are actively tracking Russian armored movements near the front line. Voloshyn reported that units of the Russian Pacific Fleet’s 40th Separate Marine Brigade recently attempted an assault with a mix of armored and light motorized vehicles, but Ukrainian defenders detected and struck the column in advance.
“In winter, there were fewer of these vehicles, but now daily we destroy two to three tanks, three to five infantry fighting vehicles, and over a dozen light motorized vehicles,” he said.
The most intense activity is currently in the Huliaipole axis, where Russian troops are trying to advance on Ukrainian positions near Myrne, Huliaipole, and Zaliznychne. Voloshyn described the area as one of the hottest spots along the southern front, with roughly 15–20 combat engagements daily.
“In the Huliaipole sector, the enemy is conducting very active assault operations. Over the past 24 hours, we recorded 10 enemy assaults. Ukrainian forces also carried out reconnaissance and strike actions, destroying enemy groups attempting to infiltrate,” Voloshyn said.
He added that Russian troops are attempting to push toward the Haichur River, near settlements such as Zelene, Hirke, and Dobropillia, while several skirmishes were also recorded within Huliaipole itself. Ukrainian forces continue to repel assaults and prevent the Russian forces from establishing footholds in these contested areas.
