Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a series of high-level meetings in Madrid, including talks with King Felipe VI at the Zarzuela Palace and with Spanish parliamentary leaders, focusing on continued support for Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing war.
During his meeting with the Spanish monarch, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Spain and its people for their consistent backing since the start of Russian aggression. He also thanked the country for hosting around 240,000 Ukrainians who were forced to flee their homes due to the war. In separate talks with Spanish lawmakers, including Congress Speaker Francina Armengol and Senate Speaker Pedro Rollán, Zelenskyy highlighted Spain’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Discussions focused on defense cooperation, particularly strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Zelenskyy noted Spain’s participation in international support initiatives and said Ukraine is counting on further contributions.
The Ukrainian president also outlined newly signed defense agreements between the two countries and emphasized interest in joint projects with Spanish companies, which he said would enhance security not only for Ukraine and Spain but for Europe as a whole.

Additional topics included mechanisms for using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine and measures to strengthen the country’s energy resilience.
