The Japanese government has decided to join NATO’s initiative to supply Ukraine with U.S.-made ammunition and equipment, under which it will purchase non-lethal gear for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This was reported by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.
Tokyo has already informed several NATO countries and the Ukrainian authorities of its decision. Japan, a NATO partner in Asia, is expected to officially announce its participation in the PURL initiative in the near future.
The Japanese government emphasizes that its funds will be used exclusively to purchase non-lethal equipment and gear, which may include radar systems and body armor.
Officials in Tokyo note that even non-lethal equipment is important for Ukraine, and Japan’s participation in the initiative represents a significant step in providing aid to the country.
NHK also recalls that more than 20 NATO countries, as well as Asian partners of the Alliance—Australia and New Zealand—have already joined PURL and pledged contributions to the initiative.
