Russia plans to start supplying natural gas to Iran as early as 2025. The plan involves using existing pipelines as well as constructing new branches.

The relevant information was published on the website of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.

It is noted that the existing logistical infrastructure (the Mozdok–Shirvanovka–Hajigabul–Astara–Abadan pipeline) will allow the supply of up to 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Currently, the gas price is still being negotiated, so the exact start date for deliveries has not yet been determined.

The projected capacity of the new gas project is up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. At the beginning of 2025, the parties finally agreed on the route of the new pipeline, which will pass through the territory of Azerbaijan.

In addition to gas cooperation, the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Iran is planned through a Russian credit line.

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine reports that the implementation of the gas project creates new opportunities for diversifying Russian exports under sanctions restrictions. It could also serve as another method of settling accounts with Tehran for its military assistance in the war against Ukraine. For Iran, this is a chance to cover the gas shortage for consumers living in the north of the country, as local gas fields are located in the south.
