The Ukrainian side is working on strengthening the protection of railways, as well as water infrastructure—bridges, dams, hydroelectric plants, pumping stations, and more.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this while speaking with journalists in response to questions about potential Russian attacks on water supply systems.
“Judging by the documents we received from intelligence, the Russian forces will strike logistics—railways and other infrastructure. They will also target water supply. The Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with local authorities, must address this and are already working on it. We’re talking about serious infrastructure—bridges, dams, hydroelectric plants, as well as pumping stations, drinking water supply, and so on. We need to prepare for this just as we are now preparing to protect the energy sector,” he said.
Zelensky noted that the Air Forces are already strengthening air defense and integrating the systems accordingly. According to him, in some places, additional physical protection is still needed.
“All regional authorities and communities must be involved in the proper preparation. In every village and city, the heads and mayors must handle this. They must know what is most critical—without it, there will be no sewage or drinking water. Protection must be maximal,” he emphasized.
The President pointed out that the Russian forces had hoped to break Ukraine this winter, but they have exhausted their own resources in missiles and drones.
“We have to be honest: it was very difficult for us because they persistently struck at us, destroying our heating and electricity generation capabilities. And although their operation against the energy sector continues, they are somewhat depleted in the number of missiles and drones. So they understand that in spring and summer, they will no longer have such a strong impact,” he said.
