The Security Service of Ukraine, with the assistance of the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, uncovered a new FSB espionage attempt within the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
As a result of a special operation in Lviv, a Russian citizen was detained. He had joined one of the combat units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a volunteer and began working for the Russian intelligence service.
Specifically, this individual was directing Russian missile strikes on the Lviv region. To carry out hostile tasks, he provided the FSB with the coordinates of his unit’s temporary base and adjacent military units.
He also sent the Russian forces geolocations of armored convoys, transit depots, and vehicle fleets along the Ukrainian border.
It was established that the Russian maintained contact with his handler through anonymous chats. To conceal his espionage communications, he used three smartphones with different operators, including from EU countries.
However, this did not help the Russian forces. SSU officers documented the agent’s intelligence activities and detained him while he was heading to an ATM to check for funds sent from Russia.
Investigations revealed that the FSB involved his brother in Russia to recruit him for cooperation.
The SSU investigators have formally charged the agent.
The suspect remains in custody.
