The President of the European Council, António Costa, believes that Russia’s war against Ukraine poses a threat to the entire international community, making the achievement of peace a priority for all countries. He made this statement during a high-level session of the UN Security Council.

“Peace in Ukraine is not only in the interest of Ukraine, not only in the interest of Europe. It is in the interest of the entire global community… The pursuit of peace must be a priority for the world community,” Costa said.

He reminded that the war began with Russia’s “unjustified and illegal attack” and has only one cause – Moscow’s refusal to recognize Ukraine’s right to determine its own future.

Costa emphasized that the European Union will continue working to end the war and fully support Ukraine.

“The ceasefire, which Ukraine has already agreed to, is the first step. And I urge Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council, to agree to sit at the negotiating table, stop the killings, halt the destruction, and cease threatening neighboring countries,” he said.

The official also called on the international community to engage more actively in peace efforts and highlighted the role of the US president:

“The European Union supports President Trump’s efforts for peace, and I would like to see China, also a permanent member of the Security Council, join in establishing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

According to Costa, achieving peace requires increased pressure on Russia.

“The European Union will continue to apply sanctions against Russia to ensure lasting peace,” he assured.

The European Council president stressed that within the framework of the Coalition of the Willing, the EU is ready to contribute by providing concrete security guarantees to Ukraine.

“We will continue supporting Ukraine on its path to full membership in the European Union,” the European official added.
