Ukraine and Portugal plan to implement joint agricultural projects in irrigation, food processing, and entry into third-country markets, including Africa.

The strengthening of cooperation was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy following a visit by committee chair Oleksandr Haidu to Portugal.

According to the statement, during a meeting with Portuguese Minister of Agriculture and the Sea José Manuel Fernandes, the sides discussed steps to expand the presence of Ukrainian agricultural products on EU markets. Special attention was given to restoring logistics chains and introducing technologies to create added value in Ukraine’s agricultural sector.

The dialogue also focused on adapting Ukrainian legislation to EU requirements. According to Haidu, Portugal’s experience is critically important for reforming farmer support mechanisms and updating industry standards.

“Portugal has significant experience in adapting to European Union policies, and for us it is important in the process of implementing EU regulatory norms in Ukraine, mechanisms for supporting farmers, as well as updating standards and requirements,” Haidu said.

Following the talks, the parties agreed on attracting Portuguese investment and facilitating technological exchange to stabilize Ukraine’s agricultural sector under martial law.
