To mark Defenders Day, special forces of the 10th Mobile Border Guard Detachment unveiled the “Heavenly Watch” memorial on Ukraine’s maritime fortress in the Black Sea — Snake Island.
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that the memorial was erected in honour of all special forces soldiers who gave their lives in battles for Ukraine.
“Snake Island is an island with centuries of history and extraordinary mythology dating back to long before our era. In modern history, it has become a place of strength, charged with the spirit of the Ukrainian border guard who told the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva, where to go, raised the morale of the Ukrainian military, and showed the entire world our national character and readiness to fight the aggressor. The phrase, now known to everyone, instantly spread around the world and continues to carry its power to this day,” the statement said.
The State Border Guard Service recalled that the village of Bile, located on the island, was occupied in February 2022 and liberated by Ukraine’s Defence Forces in the summer of the same year. Today, unfortunately, it has been completely destroyed by Russian missile and drone strikes, which continue to this day.

Ukrainian border guards continue their combat duty in the Black Sea, protecting the first metres of the country’s sacred borders at an enormous cost.
