Russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia early on September 21, damaging residential buildings, a shopping centre and one of the oldest buildings of Zaporizhzhia National University.
Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, said two apartment buildings and an educational institution were damaged in the attack. Fires broke out at several of the affected sites.
“The enemy attacked a high-rise building in Zaporizhzhia,” Fedorov initially reported. He later confirmed that the strike had also hit a shopping centre.
One person was injured, according to preliminary information.
Among the buildings seriously damaged was the oldest building of Zaporizhzhia National University. Images from the scene showed extensive destruction at the university site, while the shopping centre was engulfed in fire following the strike.
Emergency services were working at the affected locations, extinguishing fires and assessing the extent of the damage.
The full consequences of the attack are still being established.
