The plan for reforming Ukraine's law enforcement agencies includes strengthening cooperation between law enforcement bodies and the European Police Office as well as the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

This was announced by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Oleksii Serhieiev at the conference "Comprehensive Reform of the Law Enforcement System as a Key Element of Ukraine's European Integration."

“I want to focus on the first sections of the plan, which are united by a common goal: increasing the efficiency of practical operations of law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor's office. One of the main tasks is to develop a draft law on law enforcement agencies, which will serve as the foundational document for further amendments and the development of new acts by all law enforcement bodies,” he stated.

Serhieiev reminded that one of the aims of the law enforcement reform is to shift the approach from reacting to committed crimes to preventing them. The plan also envisions deepening ties with European law enforcement agencies—Europol, Eurojust, and others.

“Cooperation with Europol and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) is being strengthened. Law enforcement bodies are becoming more actively involved in the work of the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT). This enhances our practical cooperation in countering organized transnational crime and strengthens our capabilities in fighting the illicit trafficking of weapons and drugs, human trafficking, and illegal migration,” the Deputy Minister added.

He also announced that the government will soon approve the Integrated Border Management Strategy through 2031. According to him, the document has already been finalized and will be adopted in the near future.

“A separate focus within the law enforcement reform plan is on modernizing border management. In particular, a coordination center for integrated border management has already been established, and the development of the Integrated Border Management Strategy through 2031 has been completed and will be approved shortly,” Serhieiev noted.
