Ukraine and Syria will soon mutually resume the operation of their diplomatic missions. This was announced on the evening of April 5 by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.

Sybiha discussed the matter with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, as well as further cooperation in trade, education, and humanitarian efforts. The meeting took place during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s first visit to Syria.

“We agreed to reopen embassies in Kyiv and Damascus in the near future — an important step in strengthening our partnership.,” Sybiha said.

The minister noted that since the restoration of diplomatic relations between Kyiv and Damascus in September 2025, trade volumes between the two countries have increased ninefold. The sides also discussed security issues, which, according to Sybiha, are interconnected for Europe and the Middle East. In particular, they addressed the topics of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the negotiation process, and post-war reconstruction.

Kyiv severed diplomatic relations with Damascus in 2022 under the rule of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, after his decision to recognize the so-called independence of the temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
