In Kyiv, Ukraine’s Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov met with the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius. The two sides discussed the current security situation, Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russia’s armed aggression, and next steps in developing Ukraine’s defence-industrial potential.
Minister Umerov thanked the European Union for its steadfast support since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. During the meeting, the Ukrainian side provided updates on the situation at the front and emphasized Ukraine’s determination to achieve a just peace.
“The Russian forces continues its attempts to destroy our statehood, so continued support for the development of Ukraine’s defence capabilities remains a vital priority,” said Rustem Umerov.
The Minister noted that in response to the challenges of war, Ukraine has significantly strengthened the capabilities of its domestic defence industry. In particular, Ukraine is counting on deeper integration into the European defence-industrial complex.
“We expect integration into the European defence industry — for joint production of critically important security solutions. We focused on new EU mechanisms that can help attract additional funding for Ukrainian manufacturing. We are ready for deep cooperation with Europe to implement large-scale joint projects effectively,” the Defence Minister said.
The sides paid particular attention to the EU’s new SAFE credit mechanism aimed at arms procurement. The Ukrainian side expressed interest in joining this initiative.
“Europe is ready to invest in its own security — and Ukraine’s experience will be extremely valuable to our partners. We have technologies and capabilities we are ready to share with our allies. We are also interested in developing the production of advanced European models, which are critically needed by our military for the effective defence of Ukraine. A strong Europe is only possible together with a strong Ukraine,” emphasized Rustem Umerov.
