Russian strike on Ukraine causes energy emergency in Moldova

Last night, Moldova’s energy system experienced an emergency following a Russian attack on Ukraine that damaged critical infrastructure, leading to the shutdown of the 400 kV Isaccea–Vulcănești high-voltage power line, the company Moldelectrica reported.

The damage occurred near Ukrainian energy facilities. Specialists identified multiple faults that require specialized technical work and coordination between transmission system operators to restore full functionality.

Maia Sandu, President of Moldova, condemned the attacks, calling strikes on civilian energy infrastructure a war crime that threatens not only Ukraine but the entire region.

“Russia alone bears responsibility,” she emphasized.

Alexandru Muntianu, Prime Minister of Moldova, stated that the shutdown of the Isaccea–Vulcănești line jeopardized the country’s energy stability.

“Alternative supply routes have been activated to prevent blackouts, but the situation remains unstable,” he said.

The affected transmission line provides roughly 50% of Moldova’s electricity supply, serving as the main import route from Romania. The government has urged citizens to reduce electricity consumption as much as possible while technical teams work to restore normal operations.

During the strike, Russian forces targeted the line on Ukrainian territory, and official reports from Chișinău describe the situation as “very serious.”
