Russian crews for the Sarma multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) are undergoing training at a range near Astrakhan, after which they are planned to be deployed to the combat zone in southern Ukraine to strike operational-tactical targets.

This was reported by the spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, Vladyslav Voloshyn.

“Currently, crews of the Russian new Sarma MLRS are training at a range in Russia near Astrakhan. This Sarma MLRS is a 300-mm upgraded and refined launcher,” he said.

Voloshyn clarified that the new system is a modernized version of the Russian Tornado-S (9A54), designed to fire guided 300-mm rockets.

“They are being trained to use upgraded 300-mm guided rockets called Posylka, designated 9M561, as well as guided rockets called Otkrytka, 9M562. The range of these rocket systems reaches up to 120 kilometers,” the spokesperson said.

According to him, training is currently underway for the crews of one of the artillery brigades fighting in southern Ukraine, with plans to move them to the combat zone afterward.

“These rocket systems will be used to carry out specialized fire missions in the southern Ukraine zone to strike operational-tactical targets, such as command posts and positions of our rocket systems,” Voloshyn concluded.

The Sarma 300 mm Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) is a Russian-made heavy rocket artillery system developed to provide highly mobile, precision-capable long-range fire support under modern battlefield conditions. Designed as an evolution of the earlier 9K58-4 “Kama” project, Sarma emphasizes reduced launcher mass, rapid redeployment, and compatibility with guided 300 mm munitions, reflecting a doctrinal shift toward survivable, networked rocket artillery.
